Duncan Smith (Consultancy) Having achieved a first class honours degree at the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) in Biochemistry in 1998, Duncan completed a PhD (jointly supervised by Professor Simon Gaskell) in the Proteomic analysis of Oncogenic Tyrosine Kinases at the University of Manchester in 2001. Immediately following the PhD training, he worked in the pharmaceutical industry with Renovo Ltd where he ran a project using advanced LCMS technologies to analyse the downstream consequences of TGFb3 with particular focus on this cytokines influence on the phosphoproteome. In 2004 Duncan returned to academia by joining the research groups of Tony Whetton and Valerie Vouskoff where his remit was to develop and implement methodologies to analyse both the proteomes and phosphoproteomes of differentiating embryonic stem cells. This work involved the implementation of state of the art multidimensional LC combined with isotopic labeling based quantitation approaches in addition to novel phosphoproteome analysis tools. In April 2006, he was appointed head of PICR (Paterson Institute for Cancer Research) mass spectrometry with the responsibility of providing all LCMS based method developments to keep the institute at the cutting edge in the key areas of protein identification, quantitative protein profiling and advanced post-translational modification studies.
